Byzantine Attempt
October 09, 2007
I was recently given the opportunity to design some material for our church, St. Michael Orthodox Church. As someone relatively new to Orthodoxy, learning how to see and understand Byzantine art and typography in a way that translates well into graphic design proved to be challenging. I suspect I’ll look back at this work in a number of years (or maybe even tomorrow) and see my mistakes â but for today, I’m pleased it turned out as well as it did.
The Taste of St. Michael image is a banner 7 feet wide and 10 feet tall, printed on two canvases sewn together for a double-sided effect, and tied to some poles alongside the road. The event was last weekend and tons of people came. I bought some coffee and creamed honey from the monks.
Our church is also beginning the process of forming a new Kâ12 private school in town that will use classical teaching methods â Holy Myrrhbearers Classical Academy. To help spread the word, I designed this poster and a matching brochure. The icon was photographed on a wall inside the church.
Click the images to see their whole. More to come I am certain, and I hope.
