Now and later

Someone emailed me last week to point out that I had said Blue Beanie Day to be November 26, rather than what Zeldman said to be November 27. I wrote back to point out that my journal entry about Blue Beanie Day was for last year’s event, in which it was indeed November 26.

This got me thinking about what anyone who keeps a weblog for a while gets to thinking about. I need to somehow make it known — more than the little date next to the title — that a journal entry might be old or pertaining to a certain other time period.

This reminded me of the work Shaun Inman did a while back. And it also reminded me of a new feature in Textpattern (4.0.7 just released) that lets you choose when a post will expire, at which point you can do something fancy or clever to the entry to show it’s beyond its prime. I’m sure WordPress has plugins that do this, but this new little feature has me eager to move this site over to Textpattern.

Meanwhile, I’m pondering how books and other publications show their age, and how that can be translated to the web. I’m also thinking about the difference between age and pertinence, for age is not equal to irrelevancy.
